Should You Standardize Totes or Build a Rack for Mixed Sizes?
Opening a garage and seeing six styles of storage tote can make “replace everything with one bin” sound like the obvious plan. Sometimes it is. A common tote size can simplify labels, slot planning, and future purchases. But replacing sound containers can also cost money, create waste, and force awkward items into bins that do not suit them.
The better decision is not uniformity at any price. It is a storage system in which each keeper tote has a deliberate location, can be reached without dismantling a stack, and can be replaced later without making the rack unusable. Use the process below to decide which bins should be standardized, which deserve purpose-built openings, and which should leave the garage entirely.
Start with the job, not the appearance
Matching containers make a garage look orderly, but appearance is only one outcome. First define what the rack must do. A household may need frequent access to sports gear, long-term storage for children’s clothing, a few shallow holiday-decoration bins, and one unusually large camping tote. A small shop may need direct access to repeat-use kits, returned parts, consumables, and project archives.
Ask four practical questions:
- Which totes are opened weekly, seasonally, or almost never?
- Which contents truly require a particular tote shape or size?
- Who must remove and return each loaded tote?
- Which containers can still be purchased or replaced predictably?
A uniform wall of bins is not an improvement if a frequently used tote is too heavy, a lid cannot close, or an oversized item gets stored loose because it no longer fits. Make an inventory of the actual tote collection
Do not describe the collection as “mostly large bins.” Put every tote into a simple inventory. Give each container a temporary ID and record its contents category, use frequency, condition, loaded weight when useful, and exact outside dimensions. Group bins by matching model and dimensions only after measuring them.
Record at least:
- overall width: include the widest rim, handles, latches, and lid overhang;
- overall depth: include projections at the front and back;
- overall height: measure with the correct lid fully seated;
- support geometry: note the rim or surface the proposed rack is intended to support;
- loaded handling: note whether the intended user can comfortably control the tote; and
- condition: flag cracked rims, bowed bottoms, damaged handles, missing lids, or containers that no longer close properly.
Printed capacity labels are not rack dimensions. Two containers sold with similar volume descriptions can have different rims, tapers, handles, and lids. Follow the garage and tote measuring process instead of designing around a nominal gallon number.
Sort the inventory into four decisions
Once the measurements and uses are visible, assign each tote to one of four groups. This prevents a few odd containers from controlling the entire design.
- Keep as a standard group. These are matching, serviceable totes that fit their contents and represent enough of the collection to justify repeated openings.
- Keep as a special-purpose tote. This container has an unusual dimension for a legitimate reason, such as long decorations, a specific equipment kit, or bulky lightweight gear.
- Replace during setup. The tote is damaged, difficult to handle, poorly matched to its contents, or an unsupported one-off that can reasonably be consolidated into the selected standard.
- Remove or store elsewhere. The contents do not deserve rack space or are unsuitable for ordinary garage tote storage.
Do not buy replacement bins before decluttering. An unused hobby, outgrown clothing, duplicate decorations, and unidentified project leftovers can disappear from the rack plan rather than receiving new matching containers. When standardizing totes makes sense
Standardization is valuable when a large share of the collection serves similar jobs and one tote family suits the contents. Repeated dimensions make the slot map easier to understand. Replacement planning is simpler, labels can occupy consistent positions, and empty openings can accept more than one specific bin.
Consider moving toward a standard tote when:
- many one-off bins are near the end of their useful life;
- the contents can be regrouped without overloading containers;
- multiple household members need a simple return-anywhere system;
- the selected tote is comfortable for its intended users when loaded;
- the container’s outside dimensions and support surfaces suit the proposed rack; and
- you have a realistic replacement plan if that exact model changes or disappears.
Standardization does not have to happen in one purchase. Select a preferred family, reserve compatible openings for it, and replace old containers only when they fail or when their contents are reorganized. Mark the inventory with “preferred replacement size” so a future purchase supports the plan rather than restarting the mismatch.
When mixed-size openings are the more practical choice
A custom layout can be useful when the size differences correspond to real storage jobs. Shallow totes may keep small parts visible and manageable. Medium bins may suit frequently used household categories. A limited number of larger containers may be appropriate for bulky but relatively light items. Forcing all three jobs into one bin can waste space or create loads that are difficult to handle.
Mixed-size planning is strongest when the collection has a few clear families rather than dozens of unrelated one-offs. For example, a rack might have a repeated section for the primary household tote, a smaller repeated section for shallow bins, and one clearly labeled bay for oversized containers. Every special opening should have a reason and an assigned tote or use.
Custom sizing matters here because the useful unit is the loaded tote, not a generic rectangle. The builder needs the actual container dimensions, quantity of each type, support details, loaded weights, desired access zones, and room constraints. A photo is helpful context, but it cannot replace those measurements.
Avoid designing a permanent slot for every random bin
There is a difference between accommodating a stable mixed collection and preserving years of accidental purchases. If the rack contains one opening for every tote ever brought home, future organization becomes harder. A damaged one-off may be impossible to replace, while its custom opening remains too small or too large for anything else.
Use a simple threshold: a special opening should support a repeatable tote family, an item with a genuine dimensional need, or a clearly defined flexible zone. If it does none of those things, consolidate or replace the container rather than allowing it to dictate the structure.
Flexible zones still need boundaries. Define the maximum outside dimensions, intended support method, permitted loading, and approved tote types with the builder. Do not assume an opening designed around one rim or footprint will safely accept any container that can be pushed into it.
Plan rack sections rather than scattering sizes
Group matching openings into visible sections. A predictable layout is easier to label, load, inspect, and explain to another user than a checkerboard of large and small bins. Keep the most frequently accessed section in a comfortable reach zone, subject to the rack instructions and the needs of the users.
One practical map might use:
- Section A: the primary tote family for routine household storage;
- Section B: shallow bins for light, frequently accessed categories;
- Section C: larger purpose-specific totes in appropriate positions;
- Section D: one or more intentionally empty growth openings; and
- separate storage: items that should not be kept in the garage or ordinary totes.

Account for weight and access, not just fit
A tote fitting into an opening does not make its placement suitable. Large containers can become awkward when filled with dense materials, and a shallow bin can still be heavy when it contains tools or hardware. Weigh representative packed totes using an appropriate scale instead of judging by size.
Discuss loaded weights and intended users with the rack builder. Follow the builder’s loading, capacity, placement, anchoring, and maintenance instructions. Keep difficult loads in positions where the intended user can control them without climbing or reaching beyond a comfortable range, and divide contents when a tote is unwieldy.
Before approving the layout, perform the motion on the floor with each representative tote: grip it, lift it, turn, and set it on a stable landing surface. Leave room for replacement and growth
A rack should reflect the collection you expect to keep, plus a modest and deliberate margin—not every hypothetical future purchase. Count current keeper totes after decluttering, then identify likely additions such as another clothing size, a recurring business kit, or a seasonal category that is temporarily in use.

Keep the dimensions and a photo of each approved tote model in the storage inventory. When a bin needs replacement, compare the complete outside geometry rather than trusting a product name that may have changed. Recheck fit with an unloaded container and follow the rack builder’s guidance before placing a loaded replacement into service.
Use a phased conversion if the budget or waste matters
You do not need to discard sound containers to gain order. A phased plan can provide most of the benefit:
- Declutter and remove damaged totes.
- Select one preferred tote family for ordinary future replacements.
- Keep existing matching groups that work well.
- Preserve only justified special-purpose containers.
- Plan rack sections around those stable groups.
- Replace remaining one-offs as they fail or as categories are reorganized.
- Recycle, donate, or dispose of retired containers only through options appropriate for their condition and local rules.
This approach prevents an organization project from becoming a large shopping trip. It also gives the household time to learn whether the preferred tote is genuinely comfortable and useful before buying many of them.

- the count and exact outside dimensions of every tote family;
- photos showing rims, lids, handles, and other projections;
- representative loaded weights and handling concerns;
- which totes require frequent, seasonal, or rare access;
- available wall width, height, depth, and retrieval clearance;
- vehicle, overhead-door, utility, workbench, freezer, and walkway conflicts;
- the number and intended type of growth openings; and
- whether a fixed or mobile design is being considered.
Ask how each tote is supported, which substitutions are acceptable, how the rack should be loaded and secured, and what inspection or maintenance is expected. Do not infer capacity or compatibility from the rack’s appearance.
