How to Choose Tote Sizes for a Custom Storage Rack
The best tote size is not automatically the largest bin that fits along the garage wall. A useful tote must hold a sensible category, remain manageable when loaded, pass through the route to the rack, and slide into an opening designed for its actual outside dimensions.
That makes tote selection a workflow decision, not just a shopping decision. Before choosing rack dimensions, compare what you need to store, who will retrieve it, how often it moves, and whether the same tote model is likely to be available when you add or replace bins later.
This guide helps you organize those decisions before requesting a custom rack. It does not establish load ratings or structural requirements. Follow the tote and rack manufacturers' instructions, stay within applicable limits, and ask the builder about materials, connections, anchoring, casters, installation, and safe use for the proposed configuration.
Start with contents, not gallon labels
Make a rough inventory before buying a matching set of containers. Group the items by how they are used rather than by where they currently happen to sit. Practical categories might include holiday decorations, camping equipment, children’s clothing by size, sports gear, household keepsakes, project supplies, and seasonal yard items.
Then ask four questions about each category:
- Volume: Does the category fill one large tote, or would two smaller bins create clearer groups?
- Density: Will the contents become difficult to control before the tote is full?
- Frequency: Is the bin retrieved weekly, seasonally, or almost never?
- Handling: Who will move it, and from what rack height?
Bulky, light items may work well in a larger tote. Dense hardware, books, canned supplies, or other heavy contents can make a large container awkward long before its volume is used. Splitting a dense category into smaller, clearly labeled totes may produce a system that is easier to use and less likely to be abandoned.
Compare outside dimensions, not nominal capacity
A gallon label describes approximate internal capacity; it does not define a universal rack opening. Two products sold with the same nominal capacity can differ at the lid, handles, base, corners, and overall height. Even totes within one brand family may taper differently.
For every tote model, record:
- the widest outside width, including handles and lid edges;
- the greatest outside depth, including the lid overhang;
- the total height with the lid correctly seated;
- the shape and width of the rim or support area;
- any latches, wheels, hinges, or projections that affect movement;
- the model name or product number shown on the tote or label.
Measure a real sample whenever possible. Do not design from an interior dimension, a shelf tag, or the assumption that every tote with the same gallon count is interchangeable. Run a representative loaded-tote test
An empty tote can make almost any size seem convenient. Test the candidate with representative contents packed in the way you expect to use it. Seat the lid, lift only a load you can safely control, carry it along the actual route, and set it down in the proposed retrieval area.
Do not deliberately overload a tote for the test, and do not lift a bin that feels unsafe. The goal is to discover whether the category and container belong together. If a tote bows, the lid does not seat, the contents shift unpredictably, or the load is difficult to handle, reduce the contents or choose a different container. Repeat the motion at the approximate height where the tote would live. A bin that is manageable near the floor may be a poor choice for an upper opening. Frequently handled and heavier categories deserve deliberate positions; an empty slot is not a reason to place an awkward load overhead.
Decide whether to standardize one tote model
Using one tote model can simplify rack planning, labels, replacement decisions, and the visual inventory. Every opening can follow the same geometry, and bins can change positions without a sizing conflict. This works well when the household has many similar-volume categories and one container handles them comfortably.
Standardization has a tradeoff: the chosen size may be inefficient for very small, very bulky, or unusually shaped categories. It can also encourage people to overfill a large tote with dense items simply because that is the only container in the system.
A practical compromise is to standardize one primary tote for most storage and reserve a smaller secondary size for dense or frequently used categories. Keep the number of tote families low enough that each rack opening has an obvious purpose.
Plan mixed-size racks in clear zones
A custom rack can accommodate more than one tote size, but mixed openings should be intentional. Randomly alternating several container shapes can make future replacement and inventory harder. Instead, group matching openings into visible zones—for example, a bank of primary household totes beside a smaller bank for project supplies.
Record the model and outside dimensions assigned to each zone. Give every opening an address, such as A1 through A8 for the primary size and B1 through B4 for the secondary size. Avoid planning an opening around a tote you have not measured. If an older bin has an unusual rim, damaged lid, or shape that no longer suits the system, it may be better to transfer the contents than make every future rack decision accommodate that one container.
Check lids, handles, and support geometry
The lid is part of the tote’s outside envelope. Confirm that it seats fully without bulging contents and that latches or raised edges will not catch during insertion and removal. Measure molded handles at their widest point, not just the narrower body below them.
Also show the builder how the tote rim and body are shaped. Do not assume a rack designed around one rim style will safely support another. Ask which parts of the tote the design is intended to contact, how much clearance is planned, and what conditions would make a tote unsuitable for that opening.

Account for the route from storage to use
The tote has to reach the rack before it can be organized. Measure narrow doors, steps, turns, vehicle gaps, and any other part of the carrying route. A very wide bin may fit the rack wall but be awkward to carry through the house or around a parked vehicle.
At the rack, reserve enough open floor area to remove the tote completely and place it on a stable surface without standing in a vehicle path or blocking the main door. Think about replacement before filling the rack
Totes are consumer products, and exact models can change over time. Save a photo of the product label and record the outside measurements, model identifier, purchase source, and purchase date in your household inventory. That information helps you compare a replacement instead of assuming a similar color or gallon label will fit.
If long-term interchangeability matters, consider buying the planned set together after one sample has passed the measurement and handling tests. Match tote size to the storage rhythm
The same garage may need different handling patterns:
- Weekly-use bins: favor manageable containers and easy rack positions so returning the tote is not a chore.
- Seasonal bins: group complete activities or holidays, then rotate them to convenient positions when their season begins.
- Archive bins: use durable labels and an inventory so rarely opened totes do not need to be searched one by one.
- Project bins: keep categories narrow enough that one tote can move to the work area without unpacking unrelated supplies.
- Moving bins: choose categories and weights that remain manageable through doorways, stairs, loading, and unloading.

When custom sizing is especially useful
Custom sizing becomes useful when the room or tote system has genuine constraints: a measured wall between fixed features, a deliberate mix of two bin families, limited usable height, a specific retrieval path, or a shop inventory that needs clearly separated categories. The rack can then be discussed around the containers and room you actually have rather than around a generic footprint.
Customization does not make every possible tote mix sensible, and it does not remove the need for safe placement and use. A good builder conversation should include the exact tote samples, outside measurements, representative loaded handling, opening arrangement, wall and floor conditions, overhead conflicts, retrieval area, intended users, and whether mobility is being considered.
