How Many Tote Rack Slots Do You Actually Need?
The right tote rack size is not always the number of bins currently sitting in the garage. Some half-empty totes can be combined. A few heavy or awkward containers may not belong in a rack at all. Seasonal gear, household changes, and upcoming projects may also require openings that do not exist yet.
A useful capacity plan accounts for what you own, what deserves direct access, and what is likely to change. It gives a rack builder a defensible slot count instead of a guess—and helps prevent two common mistakes: ordering too few openings and immediately rebuilding floor stacks, or ordering a large rack that consumes valuable garage space without a clear purpose.
Begin with a tote census
Count every tote that could affect the plan, not just the neat row against one wall. Check shelves, closets, the basement, the shed, vehicle cargo areas, and any temporary stack left after a move or project. Include empty totes that will remain in use, but list them separately from packed containers.
Give each tote a temporary ID with painter’s tape or a removable label. Record six details in a simple sheet:
- ID: a unique number such as T-01 or T-02.
- Contents: a useful category, not “miscellaneous.”
- Outside dimensions: width, depth, and closed height at the widest points.
- Loaded weight: measured with an appropriate scale when it affects handling or rack planning.
- Access frequency: weekly, monthly, seasonal, or rarely.
- Decision: rack, combine, relocate, empty, or review.

Separate the container count from the rack count
Every tote should be counted, but not every tote should automatically receive a rack opening. The rack count should include containers that are suitable for the planned design, useful to access independently, and safe for the intended users to handle at an assigned height.
A very heavy bin of books, an unusually long container, a damaged tote, or a container holding material with special storage requirements may need another solution. Likewise, an empty tote nested inside matching empties may need one storage position rather than one position per container. Follow the tote and rack makers’ instructions, and use appropriate storage for hazardous, temperature-sensitive, leaking, or otherwise unsuitable contents.

Consolidate deliberately, not aggressively
Two partial totes can sometimes become one useful category. That does not mean every open inch should be filled. Combining unrelated contents creates dense “mystery bins” that are hard to lift and harder to maintain.
Combine totes only when the contents share a purpose, destination, or season. Good candidates might include two containers of camping kitchen supplies or several small groups of holiday lights. Poor candidates include paperwork mixed with tools, fragile decorations under dense hardware, or several unrelated categories joined only to eliminate a bin.
Check the loaded weight after consolidation. A full tote that is too awkward for its assigned user is not an improvement over two manageable containers. Count planned additions you can actually name
Growth space should be based on foreseeable use rather than a vague fear of running out. List additions likely in the next year or two: another child’s clothing rotation, a documented holiday category, camping equipment already being acquired, supplies for a planned home project, or recurring inventory for a small business.
A named future category is more useful than an arbitrary percentage. It also helps determine tote size. “One opening for winter vehicle kits” gives the builder more information than “leave extra room.” If the future contents and container are unknown, reserve flexibility without pretending the exact dimensions are settled.
Do not use every spare opening as permission to accumulate. A rack works best when empty capacity has an assigned role: a specific future category, a temporary landing position during seasonal rotation, or a modest reserve for a known household change.
Use a slot-count worksheet
Build the working count in four lines:
- Start with the current totes suitable for rack storage.
- Subtract openings eliminated through sensible consolidation or relocation.
- Add named near-term categories.
- Add a small, intentional operating reserve if the room and design allow it.
For example, suppose a garage has 27 suitable packed totes. A careful sort eliminates four openings through consolidation and relocation. Six planned categories are likely to arrive, and three openings are reserved for rotation and temporary staging. The working target is 32 openings. Keep both the count and the assumptions. If the proposed rack does not fit, you can revisit specific decisions instead of cutting random openings from the plan.
Group openings by actual tote size
A target of 32 openings does not necessarily mean 32 identical openings. Sort the rack-eligible totes by exact outside dimensions and lid or handle shape. Count how many belong to each physical group. Test actual samples because nominal capacity and retailer category names do not establish the outside profile.
Standardizing future purchases around one or two tested tote models can simplify replacement and layout planning. If the current collection includes several shapes worth keeping, a custom rack may divide the capacity into defined sections rather than forcing every tote into the largest opening.

Assign access zones before approving the row count
The number of openings must work for the people using them. Mark each tote as frequent, seasonal, or rare access, then identify which loads are light enough and manageable enough for each planned height. Frequently used totes generally deserve comfortable direct-access positions. Awkward or heavier containers should not be assigned overhead simply to make the diagram fit.
A tall rack with enough theoretical openings can still be the wrong plan if the upper rows are not practical for the household. Never plan to climb on the rack or on stored totes. Follow the builder’s loading and access guidance, and reconsider the rack height or contents if safe retrieval requires an unsuitable routine.

Reserve working space outside the rack
Slot count is only one dimension of capacity. The garage still needs space to park, open vehicle doors and liftgates, operate the overhead door, reach utilities, walk safely, and remove a tote fully. A rack that fills the entire wall on paper may interfere with normal use once its depth and retrieval path are marked on the floor.

Plan seasonal rotation without creating hidden overflow
Seasonal storage creates two different capacity needs: long-term positions for bins not currently in use and a short-term place to sort or exchange them. A spare opening can act as a buffer while one tote is being updated, but it should not become a permanent unlabeled overflow slot.

Questions to resolve before requesting a design
- How many current totes are genuinely suitable for rack storage?
- Which openings were removed through consolidation, disposal, or relocation?
- Which future openings correspond to named categories?
- How many exact tote models and outside-dimension groups must fit?
- Which bins are frequent access, heavy, awkward, or seasonal?
- Can the proposed width, height, and depth coexist with vehicles, doors, utilities, and walkways?
- Would fixed or mobile construction better match the real need?
- Who will update the labels and slot list when contents change?
Keep the census beside your measurements and photos. A builder can have a much more useful conversation when “we need more storage” becomes “we need these openings for these measured containers, used in these zones.” The result may be one rack, multiple smaller sections, or a mix of rack storage and another appropriate method.
